Westmoreland Ruritan Club

Leadership from the top results in Outstanding Club President Award and Club Blue Ribbon Award Westmoreland Ruritan Club added two new awards to their 73-year old “trophy case” as Club President Peggy Mothershead was awarded Outstanding Club President and the Club was the recipient of the Ruritan Blue Ribbon Award. Chesapeake District Governor Betty Lee Stanley attended a recent meeting to make the announcement and to present the awards. According to Stanley earning the Outstanding Club President Award requires motivating both members and club officers to complete all reports and correspondence on time, requires that the club doesn’t lose members and that attendance for regular meetings is maintained at 75% or higher. In the Westmoreland Clubs case Mothershead has shown a significant increase in club members that are helping to make the county a better place to live. As a community service organization both awards are earned based on the clubs ability to make significant contributions to Westmoreland County in each of main Ruritan committee areas: Business and Professions, Citizenship and Patriotism, Environment, Public Service and Social Development. Under Motherhead’s leadership and through the community minded members the Westmoreland Ruritan Club contributed “real help” to the Northern Neck Farm Museum, organized and completed two Liberty Day programs at area elementary schools, organized and adopt-a-highway program, funded and donated Rudy Bears to local Fire Departments, Rescue Squads and Police Forces and made major contributions to the Relay for Life campaign. Additional contributions include a robust flag program throughout the town of Montross, increasing the college scholarship program to include both area schools with a $500.00 award to each and sending multiple youth to 4H camp, State School and other young and civic camps and courses. The Westmoreland Club is an old club that has seen its ups and downs in terms of membership but never faltered in its commitment to the community. President Mothershead now in her second term as club leader has lead officers and members on a successful recruiting program and built a team that reaps the Ruritan benefits of fellowship, good will and community service.
